About zoovax

Zoovax has been developed by Anna Meredith MA VetMB CertLAS DZooMed MRCVS and Michelle Ward BSc BVSc(Hons I) DZooMed MRCVS of the Exotic Animal and Wildlife Service at the Royal (Dick)School of Veterinary Studies, University of Edinburgh. It stemmed from an idea from David Sutton MRCVS of Intervet-Schering Plough, who recognised there was a need for more information on the extra-label use of vaccines in non-domestic species, largely as a result of the increasing number of veterinary surgeons asking his company for advice on the use of canine and feline vaccines in exotic species.

In addition to providing a comprehensive database of published literature, Zoovax seeks the contribution of veterinary surgeons from around the world to input information about their experience of vaccine use in exotic species. This information can be shared and used throughout the veterinary community to help veterinary colleagues working in zoological institutions, with exotic pets and free-ranging wildlife, make informed decisions about vaccination. Although anecdotal reports are no substitute for properly conducted controlled scientific studies, it is recognised that in many species such studies are unlikely to be undertaken.

We are indebted to Andrew Cavers, who manages the technical aspects of Zoovax. Michelle Ward is now based at Western Plains Zoo, Dubbo, New South Wales, Australia, but she will continue to be involved with the future development of the database. We are also very grateful to Intervet/Schering Plough for their sponsorship.

Zoovax will be moderated and managed by Anna Meredith and the Exotic Animal and Widlife Service. Please contribute to and use it - it is there to help you and will only be as good as the information you all provide.
